How to Handle Disapproving Friends and Family When Baby Potty Training

By J. L. Tuso

It seems that everyone who has ever had a baby, and some who have not, has an opinion when it comes to potty training. While the opinions of your family members, friends and coworkers might be well intentioned, at times they can cross the line and become intrusive and overbearing.

This can be a particular problem if you are planning to potty train your baby early. Baby potty training has been gaining traction in parenting circles, but not everyone agrees that early potty training is in the best interest of parent and child. Learning how to deal with the disapproving looks and words of those around you is just as important as dealing with your son or daughter as he or she moves through the potty training process.

Education is the Key

As with so much in the parenting realm, the key to winning the approval, or at least the acceptance, of your skeptical relatives is to provide them with as much information and documentation as you can.

Begin by scouring the web for all the information you can find about the positive aspects of early potty training for both parent and child. Print out key pages of information. When faced with questions or even criticism, feel free to share those websites and blog posts with your skeptical relatives. Let them read for themselves about early potty training and the real world success stories of other parents.

Accentuate the Positive

Pointing out the positive aspects of early potty training can go a long way when it comes to winning over even the most skeptical of relatives. You can, for instance, point out the health benefits of early potty training such as eliminating diaper rashes and reducing the risk of disease transmission that comes with diaper changes. You can also point out just how much money you are saving by limiting the use of diapers.

By pointing out the positive benefits of your proposed accelerated potty training schedule, you might be able to win over those disbelieving relatives and help them see why you were drawn to early potty training. Some people will always resist this seemingly new concept. However, by providing solid information, you can overcome many of the most common objections and you may even gain support for your efforts.
